Description:
Mountain Lake Pottenstein, which had opened in 1926, had to be shut down in 1988 due to its crumbling building substance and poor water quality. The premises were closed and the architectural jewel was left to fall into further disrepair. Over the years the community considered various ideas for the use of the former spa, but the costs for restoration were astronomically high and not financially viable for the community. However, after viewing some Natural Pools it became clear that a Natural Pool was the perfect solution: on the one hand because the facilities could be used for their original purpose. On the other, because the maintenance of a Natural Pool is significantly cheaper than that of a conventional swimming pool.
In autumn of 1998 restoration of the Art Nouveau buildings was started, in the year 2000 the Natural Pool was constructed in record-breaking time. The festive opening was on June 1, 2001.
